This Sat. 12/8: Texas groups organize Expose & Close rally at Polk County detention center
On December 8, groups from Houston and Austin will meet outside of the IAH Polk Secure Adult Detention Center to hold a protest and vigil.
The groups include Texans United for Families, Grassroots Leadership, and Houston United/Unidos. Over 100 supporters will join the Expose & Close campaign against this facility, which is contracted through ICE and operated by private prison corporation Community Education Centers.
A recent tour of the facility by Grassroots Leadership and Texans United for Families revealed inhuman conditions for the over 700 men detained there daily: men are held up to 21-23 hours a day in cramped, windowless 8-person cells; are geographically isolated from family and legal aid; and are denied adequate nutrition. Conditions in the facility were documented in English and Spanish the national Expose and Close report release.
Folks can sign up for the Austin caravan at http://www.grassrootsleadership.org/get-on-the-bus.html but the bus is almost full.
