12/23/09 Conference Call About ‘Fast For Our Families’ on New Years Day
On January 1st, at least a half dozen of our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers that have watched our lives and communities in South Florida be destroyed by the raids, detentions and deportation will take a crucial step to defend our communities. In the spirit of sacrifice, with the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, they will Fast for OUR Families. This fast is not just symbolic, although it is done in the name of all who have lost a loved one to deportation. The Fast is done so that President Obama can hear the cry of those that are hungry for justice and for the unity of all of our families.
On December 31st, the members of Fast For Our Families will take their very last meal and will not eat again until the Obama administration agrees to use its executive authority to stop separating immigrant families until their is a resolution for our broken immigration system. We also want President Obama to send his Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, to South Florida to talk to us directly about our struggle and why we need to take such a drastic step to get the administration’s attention.
Until this happens, the families that are Fasting will refuse all food. And we ask all who have ever lost a loved one: a mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter or friend to the deportation process to join us in our struggle for all of OUR Families.
