Warren Institute: Operation Streamline Report Released

January 18, 2010

via Joanna Lydgate, civil rights fellow with the Warren Institute, a think tank at UC Berkeley School of Law:

Last week the Warren Institute released a report about “Operation Streamline,” a zero-tolerance immigration enforcement program introduced along the U.S.-Mexico border in 2005.

The report, “Assembly-Line Justice,” concludes that Operation Streamline:

  • violates the U.S. Constitution;
  • diverts resources away from fighting drug-cartel violence along the border; and
  • fails to reduce undocumented immigration.

Operation Streamline requires the federal criminal prosecution and imprisonment of all unlawful border crossers.  The program, which mainly targets migrant workers, has caused skyrocketing caseloads in many of our border district courts.
