NIJC: Tell President Obama to Hold ICE Accountable for Cover-Up in Detention Deaths
via Tara Tidwell Cullen of NIJC:
The New York Times reported on January 9, 2010, that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials hid evidence of medical neglect that led to detainee deaths in the immigration detention system. Even as DHS’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced plans in recent months to reform the detention system, its employees continued to hide systemic breakdowns that led to more than 100 detainee deaths since 2003.
It is time for President Obama to take action to change ICE’s internal culture from one which opposes transparency to one in which staff at all levels are held accountable for the humane treatment of people in their custody.
Use the online form (here) to tell President Obama that Americans will not tolerate a cover-up by our government of human rights abuses in our own communities.
