Register now for DWN’s 2011 Member Conference in Austin, TX

January 24, 2011

Detention Watch Network cordially invites all of its members to attend the 9th National DWN Conference. This national gathering is an opportunity for members to re-connect, re-energize and strengthen our collaboration. The need for coordinated community action, public education, advocacy and resource sharing has never been greater. We hope you will join us!

About the Conference
This year we are getting out of DC and meeting in Texas, one of the hotbeds for detention growth. The conference will be held at the St. David’s Episcopal Church in Austin, TX on March 31-April 2, 2011.

In Austin, members will learn about what is happening in the state and share strategies to respond to the continuing human rights crisis in the immigration detention and deportation system, both in their local communities and nationally.

The conference aims to engage new and current members in the key priorities of the network, share and enhance members’ expertise, cultivate member leadership, and enlist member commitment to move forward on achieving our collective goals. Discussions will focus on DWN’s Dignity Not Detention campaign, administrative and legislative advocacy efforts and the network’s four key priorities: Standards, Alternatives, Mandatory Detention, and Local Enforcement.

The conference will provide participants the opportunity to:

  • Participate in campaign and advocacy efforts to promote reform of the immigration detention and deportation system.
  • Attend substantive skills-building sessions with a special emphasis on media training and effective messaging.
  • Meet and learn from colleagues working around the country.
  • Explore new ways to work together to increase media coverage and build community activism around detention and deportation issues.
